When the time arrived to have our Grade II listed cottage re- thatched we approached mid-Suffolk District Councils conservation officer as too the correct way to go about it. We were put in contact with Dominic Meek a local Thatcher, on his visit to us he advised us how he would Thatch our cottage and told us of some buildings that he had worked on. Looking at his work we were reassured that Dominic was the man for the job. We were pleased that he was local and also to the fact that he grew his own long straw, it was nice to go and see your potential roof growing. We were extremely pleased with the finished outcome, and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend his work.

The joy of seeing rolls of beautiful Norfolk reed being unloaded and put in stacks in my garden is with me still.
After years of worrying over my thatched roof - three and a half years under tarpaulins - I had managed to find Dominic Meek (DM Thatching Ltd).
At first, due to other commitments, he thought he would be starting in November but I pointed out that, in rough weather, my lane could become impassable for vehicles. He then re-arranged his schedule to fit me in and now, on 2nd August 2012 this amazing experience began.
To ensure that I had a completely new thatch everything was stripped to the rafters. I have a footpath by my property and it became very busy as folk came to see the progress of this wonderful craft.
Everything was cleared away on 16th October 2012 and there was this beautiful reed thatch with a netted, patterned straw ridge - the pattern unique to my roof.
It was an amazing experience to share with others - it was, and still is, the subject of admiration - a tribute to Dominic.
If he hadn't helped me out, I dread to think what life would have been like recently with the high winds and the rain.
He must have amazing organisational skills, delivery, preparation, erection and dismantling the scaffold. One thing I do remember clearly, is that my dog palled up with Dominic's little dog Diesel and they would both waylay me for a tit-bit in the mornings.
I thoroughly recommend Dominic Meek - he deserves the title 'Master Thatcher.

Having moved in to Suffolk 3 years ago we bought Spring Cottage a 15th Century thatched property knowing it required a new ridge fairly shortly. Our previous property was also thatched so we were aware of some of the issues in choosing the right thatcher who has the right experience, has a good local track record, and offers a reasonable price.
We were delighted with the work Dominic undertook for us and whilst it cost a bit more than some of the alternatives we are very pleased to have chosen him. It can be VERY costly to go with a cheaper quote and find you that you need remedial work far too soon, a false economy indeed!
Dominic is an influential member of the ‘Master Thatcher’s for our region and comes with many recommendations from villagers in our area.

Thank you for the photo you sent of the new ridge you have just completed on my cottage. The change in appearance is dramatic and certainly gives the whole place an impressive new look. I particularly like the bold design you have cut which gives the assurance that the roof will last a good time to come.

I was extremely pleased with the quality of work and craftsmanship that Dominic delivered. It was a pleasure to have him working for me – he was conscientious, reliable, trustworthy and good fun to have around my home! He produced a lovely finish to the thatch which is admired by many passers- by. A good job, well done.
When I moved into my new home I knew the thatch required attention, but after several heavy snow falls (within weeks of being there) I realised repairs were becoming urgent. I contacted Dominic who arrived when he said he would and managed to re-arrange his schedule. He did a magnificent job of re-ridging, with a unique design which has been admired, and repairing sections of reed of the main thatch. Dominic prides himself not only on the quality of his work but also on the artistry and tradition.
The quality of the work was excellent, you were friendly, hard working and a real pleasure to have around. The results speak for themselves, a big thank you."
